When Can Baby Sit in Restaurant High Chair
WAVERLY — HoneyCreek Dining was packed on its last full twenty-four hours of business organisation. The look for seating neared an hour at the height of the dinner rush, and it took merely equally long for customers to get their meals, even with last-minute server reinforcements called in.
The Waverly dining staple had been open up since 1976, but, similar many other casualties of the COVID-xix pandemic, the owners struggled to staff its total-fourth dimension positions. It closed for adept afterward the first of the year.
A Facebook post announcing HoneyCreek's fate was shared almost 1,000 times and generated more than 50 comments, and a few lamented that the restaurant's endmost would leave merely a few eateries still in Waverly.
You can count the local establishments on one manus: Vike's Corner Kitchen, Trackside Bar and Grill and Smashing Wall. Then there are the bondage: McDonald'southward, Runza. Subway closed its location on U.S. 6 final June. Casey's Full general Store and Mammoth Station both have quick food options, too.
Abbey Pascoe, Waverly Urban center Council fellow member and chair of the city's Financial and Economic Development Committee, understands the need for more than dining options in town, but information technology's not as easy as putting up a "For Charter" sign and waiting for the phone to ring. Particularly in the midst of a pandemic that has caused supply concatenation issues and staff shortages.

To survive the pandemic, Vike's Corner Kitchen had to cut its hours considerably, to 11 a.m. to five p.m., Tuesday through Fri. Possessor Rae Fraley said that was the merely way she and her husband Nick could make information technology work — with those hours, she and Nick are the only staff needed.
"In the all-time of times, with no labor shortages, it's very difficult to find people that volition mesh with your team and can perform the duties that you lot need them to perform," Fraley said.
She said she knows the new hours don't work with a lot of people's schedules. But information technology'due south been necessary, especially because their food costs have risen 30%-xl% in the by two years, she said.
"We experience bad about that. Only we are really making more profits without the added labor."
Waverly has a unique ready of challenges, too. Chief amid the limitations is its lack of vacant commercial infinite. Mike Palm, Waverly's building and zoning administrator, said in that location are very few openings in Waverly's strip malls and in areas zoned for commercial use.
"We would like to encounter more commercial growth here, I recall, merely we tin't really forcefulness the (holding) owners to create more than buildings for small businesses and whatnot," Palm said. "We're just a picayune limited correct now."
Some other problem, Pascoe said, is Waverly's proximity to Lincoln. When a business organization possessor is thinking of opening a new restaurant and is considering Waverly for the location, they have to decide whether it would brand more sense to open where the potential for customers is greater.
"We're, you know, five to seven miles away, on a quick-admission street," she said. "And then, of course, that's going to come into play."
And when a business does open in Waverly, Pascoe said, it's important that Waverly residents concord up their end of the bargain.

"We have to brand sure that we're patronizing their establishment to make sure that they're successful," she said. "Because, if they bet on Waverly, we accept to reciprocate, too."
Natasha Hoyer bet on Waverly in April of 2021, opening her hybrid women'south clothing shop and java shop Patina Joe.
She originally opened in Hawkeye, but as a Waverly resident, leasing a space with a shorter commute made more than sense. And, so far, the bet has paid off.
"It was definitely the right movement," she said. "It'southward been really good for my business concern. The community'south been awesome and very supportive."
Just opening in Waverly wasn't without its hurdles. She hoped to lease a infinite in a building with a bulldoze-thru window, merely because of the limited retail and commercial space, she compromised with ii bays next to the old Subway location. Customers can identify their coffee orders on an app and terminate by for quick pick-up.
"I feel similar we have accommodated equally best as we can," Hoyer said.
Supply chain issues were a struggle at start, too. Hoyer said her shop had to employ xanthous Subway lids for its java cups more than one time in the first couple of months. But despite the obstacles for a new business owner, she said, she's had people contact her asking if the former Subway space was bachelor for lease.
It's non. Hoyer would know, because she inquired about the space, besides. After all, it has a drive-thru window. Just as before long as she heard near Subway'due south closing, another business had already jumped on the opportunity.
El Portal Mexican Eating house plans to open in the space onetime this year. Only delays in acquiring heavy-duty kitchen equipment have pushed their opening back. According to Pascoe, the owners are moving forward with interior structure. The eating house also has locations in Auburn and Nebraska City.
Pascoe thinks El Portal could crusade a domino effect and serve as a vote of conviction for business owners to open in Waverly.
"I think that will show not just that business, but besides other businesses, that, you know, this is something Waverly asked for," she said. "I anticipate lines forever when they get here."
Pascoe said conversations are ongoing to lure business owners to Waverly, which has an like shooting fish in a barrel selling point: exponential population growth. But with that growth, it's also of import for the urban center to offer the restaurants and shops that citizens desire and need.
"Information technology's crucial for our connected growth to be able to have more businesses and restaurants come up into our community," she said.
She's confident Waverly citizens would support more restaurants and small businesses, but it's tricky to create the perfect set of circumstances for business owners to take a run a risk on the metropolis, whether information technology's finding the right location or hiring plenty staff.
"Nosotros're doing as much as we tin can to try to bring these (businesses) in for the community," Pascoe said. "Simply with the current climate, the lack of vacant buildings, it's just slower than I would want and what nigh people want."
